Completed in 1991

Set in the grounds of the medieval hall at Dartington this garden takes the classic Japanese Garden form of the “Karesansui” or dry landscape. The imagery for the main garden forms are, however, derived directly from observations of the landscape within the region. Thus, though the garden acknowledges important aspects of its tradition, it also, at the same time, seeks its own uniqueness and its location in relation to the landscape around about.

The garden contains a viewing pavilion which is derived from the waiting pavilions common to larger tea gardens.
